[The video feed turns on to show a little fox cat like creature looking expectantly upwards. Its tail swishes back and forth like how a puppy would wag its tail when happy. This earns the little creature a soft giggle from the person behind the camera.]

You're so cute, Himiko!

[Himiko chirps in response, and the camera is panned around to show a young girl now with curly brown pigtails.]

Hey there~! If anyone is watching this, I'm Rise Kujikawa!

[The camera is put down and the girl sits down on the ground, Himiko climbing into her lap. She looks less happy now. Her backdrop is the small town of New Bark.]

So, what is this place, really? I woke up in a strange house, and a crazy lady who called herself my mom shoved a bag in my hand and told me 'Good luck!'. She didn't even let me ask any questions!

[She now pats Himiko's head, and the small creature enjoys this immensely.]

This old man gave me what he called a Pokéball, goes on and on about this 'world of Pokémon', calls me a trainer, and then sends me off. The trainer manual is confusing, and this whole thing seems like some little kids video game or TV show! I know that Himiko is an Eevee because this really loud voice from my Gear told me what she is. It's called a PokéDex, right? Can I go home when I catch them all?

[She's pouting now. Himiko does the same. She seems to enjoy copying her trainer.]

Oh! And this music is really annoying. How do you turn it off?!

It's been a while since I've been on the beginning routes, but I think the most troublesome things you're likely to find are cats, owls, and a few rather large bugs.

There are eight possible Eeveelutions in all; which one do you want to see? Or at least, which one first; I'm going to have to go try to catch them one by one, to put them on video.

Other than the bugs, those don't sound too bad! How big are the bugs?

What's the first Eeveelution on the list? Is it cute?

...This is likely as good a time as any to warn you that some of the bugs here are human-sized. I doubt you're likely to run into any of them on the first path, but if you're overly concerned, there are ways of avoiding them entirely.

The first is Flareon, the Fire-type evolution. It's...fluffy.

Human-sized?

[If a text could convey shuddering, it would be in that simple sentence.]

That sounds adorable!

One moment.

[Really, it takes a little more like a few minutes, but soon enough a video feed activates, and when it does, it reveals Kirigiri — or, well, little slivers of Kirigiri, anyway, in the form of black leather gloves, purple sleeves, and some other flashes of fabric around the edges — with a bigass floofmonster of a Flareon in her arms.

The Flareon, to its credit, seems to be aware that it's on camera, and of all things, bashful about it: it's alternating between peering at the camera lens and ducking its face away to hide.]

This is Archimedes.

[Rise can't help but squeal softly. Himiko joins her in the squealing.]

He's super fluffy! It's nice to meet you, Archimedes! You're so cute~

He has five brothers, comprising four of the other possible Eeveelutions, plus one that chose to remain an Eevee.

[A fact the Flareon affirms with a squeak.]

...His mother was the fifth of the evolutions, and his grandmother was the sixth.

[She doesn't understand anything but brothers, Eevee, mother and grandmother]

How many are there?

[...god.]

We're in possession of somewhere around thirty. Most of various relation.

'We're'? H-How many people are in on this? Are you just breeding them to be sold or something?

[She's freaking out and assuming the worst. Don't hurt the precious babies!]

...We inherited them. My classmates and I were given title to a house when its previous owner left the region; his...collection of Eevees came with the house.

It fell to us to be their caretakers, that's all.

.... O-Oh...

[Okay. Good. She calms down now. Then blinks.]

Classmates? Did you come here with them-

[She is interrupted by Himiko, who paws at Rise's cheek impatiently. She wants to see more of her kind!]

Alright. We can ask more questions later! Which one's the next evolution?

...Vaporeon, I believe. Just a moment.

[As she sets down the Flareon and sets about the exceptionally difficult task of catching the giant-ass mermaid-tailed Water-type Eeveelution.]

...This one is Napoleon.

[Rise is impressed again, but Himiko is not. She doesn't seem to care too much for Vaporeon.]

It looks like a mermaid cat. Hi Napoleon~

...I take it your Eevee won't be selecting this particular type, if given the chance. That's probably wise, as this one in particular has a habit of —

[Wriggling like a fish, actually, hang on just a second —]

...Slapping things with its tail.

[That did not look pleasant. Himiko huffs at Napoleon. Be nice to your trainer!]

That looks like it could do a lot of damage if he really tried...

As far as I know, it isn't inherent to the species. This one is merely bad-tempered in particular.

That's a relief. I guess they all would have different natures. Like people!

[She's glad that Himiko is well behaved and sweet.]
