[She'd be barking up the wrong tree anyway, Maka already gets self-conscious about how close she is to Kaneki thanks to Rin...making weird assumptions, another girl getting into that with her would probably make her go full tsun without intending to.]
I fell in love with it the first time I went there for the badge, it's a great place and my Pokemon love it too. I grew up in a desert, so getting to live by an ocean is a welcome change. Ken's already been there for the book club, so he'd be able to show you to my house if I can't join you guys right away.
[Rin has a way of doing those kinds of things to people. Oh well, she'll cheer Maka and Kaneki on quietly. The Lovers Arcana will always ship potential ships.]
If you like water, you'd like Cerulean. Unless you've been there. It's got an amazing water park there, and a aquarium!
[She'll make sure to message Kaneki in the next few days now.] He's got all sorts of connections, doesn't he?
I was there for a badge, and I barely missed meeting a friend who lives there now. I guess some people really like that business!
True. Sometimes I wonder how with Rikki around. She tolerates me being around him because I told her Kaneki-kun isn't my type. She seemed pleased with that...
[Maka looks confused for a second and actually mouths "type?" to herself before it hits--oh, right, she means like dating type.]
He probably has more male friends than female ones...and I don't think Rikki's gotten that boys can date other boys, too.
As for me, I think she understands that I'm only interested in being Ken's friend and I understand her wanting to protect him. He's...really naive, for a guy as old as he is.
Kaneki-kun isn't the usual type of boy I run across. Though he doesn't give of a desperate vibe like the few boys I did meet like him. It's actually nice to be able to talk to a boy without him getting all fidgety and wanting to only talk about certain things.
[Rise doesn't think she needs to say anything more detailed on that last part.]
Ugh, right? All the guys I know back home just want to talk about all that stuff when it's really obvious that they've never even gotten a date with a girl, let alone gone very far with one. Like, hey, try talking like a normal person instead of comparing chest sizes to one another.
[She doesn't care, but it gets super tiring to hear how unappealing she is to guys 24/7.]
I feel comfortable around Ken, and I can't say that about a lot of people.
It's worse when I'm within earshot and they try and cover it up by suddenly talking about car or sports. It's like they think they might be seen as perverts if I get what they're saying. I just call them perverts anyways and go about my day.
[Whereas she's getting tired of being seen as nothing but an object or a trophy.]
I think Ken is one of the few people here that I didn't feel the need to act like my idol self when I first started talking to him.
[There's a...tendency in Death City's society to treat a lot of women like objects, besides the literal sense with women that are weapons. Maka feels very strongly about it, though she exists as a "reject" of that ideal, because many of her friends have to go through it. There's so much more to them than the shape of their bodies, they're such wonderful people.]
Weird, isn't it? Not being scrutinized for every little thing about you.
[...It's not as weird as the people that look her straight in the eyes and say with all honesty that she's pretty, though, that's just surreal.]
Kinda makes you feel like you want to try harder just for the people that let you be yourself.
[The words don't exactly register with Maka until about three seconds later, then she realizes what was said and tugs on one of her pigtails, looking embarrassed.]
Aw, thanks Rise. I'm glad we started talking, too. I don't really get to talk to a lot of girls for some reason, and guys drive me nuts a lot of the time, so having a girl to talk to is nice.
Really? There's a lot of girls here.... but yeah, not a lot of them seem like the social type with other girls. I have a lot more guy friends here. There's gotta be some reason for that. I still haven't figured it out.
[It's really strange. One would think that girls would want to talk to other girls.]
[She tilts her head to the side in thought, what could it be? Is it that they have difficulties with other girls?]
Maybe it's age difference. There are lots of adult women here, it'd probably be weird for them to hang out with teenage girls...and maybe they feel like, "well I'm not interested in girly stuff, if I hung out with other girls I'd have to do girly stuff"?
Maybe we'd need to tell them we're not all about girly stuff? I actually like battling, and that's not very girly. Hmmm... I don't know how to go about that unless I just tell them. What do you think?
[She does have one other friend who is a few years older she can ask about this, too.]

I guess he does? He's a nice guy, so it shouldn't be surprising that he has a lot of friends.

Like you, Maka. I'm glad we started talking.
